READY TO PICK:

ROMAINE LETTUCE

and

SWISS CHARD

Last week's sunny weather worked some magic in the vegetable garden.   All the plants had a great growth spurt, especially the leafy greens.  The Romaine lettuce and Swiss Chard leaves are lush and green - time to pick a few leaves for salad and scrambled eggs and chard.  I'm looking forward to the coming month when the plants have matured - we will have salad greens a plenty!  For now, while the plants are still young, a few leaves per plant works well to keep the leaf production stimulated without taxing it too much.

CHORES/TASKS

- Weeding (this will always be on the list :) )

- Planting:  Bean sprouts (this Friday or Saturday AM) / Trellis Structure (Thursday AM)
The potted bean sprouts at the front of the garden are getting ready to be put in the ground.  Since they're vines, they'll want to keep growing, so a string trellis will be set up so they have somewhere to climb.

The trellis will be set up in advance of the planting so that when the bean sprouts go in the soil, they won't be further disturbed.  Beans have delicate roots and don't take well to disruption.  The relocation to the garden will be change enough.

NOTE:  RAIN CANCELS the planting of the beans!

A Growing Garden

Welcome
Hi All and welcome to the Scenic Terrace Garden journal.  This is being put together so that we may all be in on the growing and nurturing of our shared vegetable garden.  Thank you, David, for the vegetable garden, and for bringing Deborah in to guide us along the way.  Thank you David, Deborah and Olesia .. Miguel too? for breaking the ground, turning the soil, clearing the weeds and preparing the beds that then welcomed the seeds and little plants.  What an effort!

What's in the journal?
The garden journal is a place where we can find updates, lists of what's ripe, what's just coming in, and what needs doing.  It's also a place for our own individual reactions and contemplations.

Each Tuesday, there will be a blog entry noting "Ready to Pick" items as well as the "Chores/Tasks" that may be done by any of us.  This week's lists are found immediately after this message.  The Tuesday entry will also include notes from Deborah relating to the different plants and their individual care.  At the end of this entry, please find a list of all the herbs and vegetables available in the different gardens (vegetable garden and the terraced herb garden) for your reference.

As we spend time in the garden, we see and learn new things that are worth sharing.  Conversations with Deborah or David often bring important information that we all may need to know.  Gardening tips we read about and try out (w/Deborah's approval) are also worth passing on.

There are days when we peek in and notice that the seeds sowed in March have become lush green grows, like the Romaine lettuce seeds Olesia sowed back in March.

More currently, the beans in starter pots and the potato cuttings in the sunken beds planted by Deborah are just peaking through after being put in the soil less than two weeks ago.  So nice to see.

Take a picture, share the love, let us all know how amazing it is to see the plants growing so beautifully.  Also, post recipes - who has a great salad or soup recipe for beets or  fava leaves?  Which tomato is the best for burgers?  Do we grow it in the garden? YES!

I hope everyone feels encouraged to share their findings, their wonder, and most importantly (to me) their recipes.

Happiness is Community Gardening -
